  1. Understanding Genetically Modified Foods

What are genetically modified organisms in relation to foods?
  2. Viburnum Leaf Beetle

The viburnum leaf beetle (VLB) (Pyrrhalta viburni) [order Coleoptera: family Chrysomelidae] damages a variety of viburnum species and hybrids by feeding and egg-laying activities. Both adults and larvae feed on the foliage of the host plant; larvae feed on the foliage from mid-spring to early summer and adults feed on the foliage from mid-summer into the fall. Highly susceptible viburnum shrubs are usually completely defoliated by the beetle. Mated female viburnum leaf beetles chew pits into the bark of twigs and stems of the host shrubs into which eggs are laid.
  3. European Elm Flea Weevil

The European elm flea weevil (EEFW) (Orchestes alni) [order Coleoptera: family Curculionidae] is a new foliage-eating beetle of elms in Ohio. The adults feed on leaves, producing circular, window-paned holes in the leaves. Larvae feed as leafminers. The primary significance of this new defoliator is the reduction in the aesthetic value of elms as landscape and streetscape trees. Management of the elm flea weevil, if desired, requires the use of either a foliar or systemic insecticide application.
  4. Physical Properties of Granular Fertilizers and Impact on Spreading

The application quality of dry granular fertilizer depends on several variables. In general, the performance of a fertilizer applicator can be contributed to 1/3 operator, 1/3 applicator and 1/3 fertilizer characteristics. When discussing operator and applicator, “operator” refers to the individual operating the equipment and “applicator” refers to the piece of application equipment.
  5. Preserving Herbs: Freezing and Drying

The use of herbs in cooking adds color to your dishes and disease-fighting antioxidants to your recipes. Herbs also add flavor to foods without increasing salt, fat or sugar contents. However, once harvested, fresh herbs have a relatively short life of only a few days in the refrigerator. To preserve herbs for extended use, there are two methods: freezing and drying. Having frozen and dried herbs on hand adds convenience to food preparation, as they can be a substitute for fresh herbs.
